Have you reached the exciting and incredibly messy milestone of weaning your child onto solids and aren’t sure what’s the best tableware with the least amount of clean up?  Thankfully, brands have taken into account all of our worries, from the mess factor to the sustainability to even the depth of the plate, and you’ll be able to find an array of tableware that contains none of the nasty stuff, are mostly sustainable and can make mealtimes fun. 

So where do you start? Well, we’ve compiled a list of the best plates and bowls out there that reduce your clean up time and encourage seamless independent eating. Plus, they’ll look fabulous in your kitchen too.

Not only are their designs aesthetically pleasing for both adults and kids (we are in love with the rabbit and monkey face plates), we love that they are toxin-, BPA- and phthalates-free and the bamboo is anti-bacterial and anti-microbial too.

If you have older kids who don’t need suction plates, the suction is removable so it’s great at growing with the child. The design of the plates are such that they have sections so that even the fussiest of eaters aren’t upset about their food mixing and it allows them to try different foods.

The Cons: These are not recommended for the dishwasher or microwave so you’ll need to hand wash them with warm water and heat the food up separately.

Munchkin have been the OG in children’s tableware for many years and there are many good reasons why. Not only are their plates BPA free, they are both microwave and dishwasher friendly too. The deep sloping sides ensures little mess is made and that the food is kept separate – a bonus for those who hate their foods touching.

For those with older kids, the set also offers a stainless steel utensil kit so that the child feels included at dinner times!

The Cons: The plates aren’t strictly stay-put as they do not have suctions however these are available on some of their other products.

Have a serial bowl thrower on hand and can’t cope with mopping the floor almost three times a day? Then you need to check out the Ezpz suction plate mats which avoid any food tornados awaiting your kitchen. They are a fantastic way of introducing your baby or toddler to independent eating and also come with or without sections.

There are many children’s tableware out there that are unfortunately not environmentally friendly. Thankfully, Zuperzozial is here to save the day with their biodegradable and aesthetically pleasing plates that are great for both home and taking out for a picnic with the kids.

Made using bamboo, corn and a sprinkle of melamine resin, expect these plates to be light in weight and extremely durable. Plus they are dishwasher friendly too!

The Cons: The colour can start to fade after a few months.

If you’re looking for some stylish and practical children’s tableware for your kitchen, these Sophie Allport sets are ideal. Not only are they chic – they come in many different designs – but they are also made with melamine meaning they are practically indestructible and contain no BPAs. 

The space design is one of our favourites but they also have a dinosaur, woodland party and unicorn set too. Bonus: they also have an egg cup saucer range so you can make your child egg and soldiers without worrying about them breaking the egg cup or making a mess.

The Cons: Unfortunately as beautiful as they are, these plates are not suitable for the microwave.
